Bulk Bags or Maxi Bags: Which Should You Order for Your London Project?
Bulk bags provide larger quantities of materials, while maxi bags hold smaller amounts. The right choice depends on how much you need, the space available and how the delivery can be received.
Before ordering, compare the confirmed quantity and total delivered cost of each option.
TSAR supplies sand and aggregates in bulk bags and maxi bags for delivery across London and Greater London.
Start with the material and quantity required
Choose the specified material first, then consider the bag format.
Sharp sand, building sand, ballast and MOT Type 1 have different uses. A convenient bag size does not make one material a suitable substitute for another.
Send your supplier the material name, any required specification and the quantity your installer has calculated.
If you only have measurements, explain what they represent. An area and depth may describe a compacted sub-base or finished concrete volume, which is not automatically the same as the loose material quantity to order.
Confirm the weight of each bag
Do not assume every bulk bag contains one tonne or that every smaller bag has the same weight.
Ask for the supplied weight of the particular material and bag format being quoted.
When comparing options, calculate the total quantity:
Number of bags × confirmed weight per bag = total supplied weight.
For example, twenty bags weighing 25kg each provide 500kg in total. Compare that with the confirmed contents of the bulk bag, rather than comparing bag prices alone.
When might bulk bags suit your project?
Bulk bags may be practical when you need a larger quantity and have a suitable place to receive and store it.
Check whether the delivery vehicle can access the site and whether the proposed unloading position is achievable. The place you want the bag may not be reachable from the road.
Browse our bulk bags to see the listed materials.
When might maxi bags suit your project?
Maxi bags may suit repairs, smaller quantities or jobs where materials need to be moved in separate loads.
Smaller bags still require suitable handling arrangements. Consider who will move them, the route from the unloading point and where they will be stored.
Not every material is listed in both formats. Check availability for the product you need in our maxi bag range.
Compare the total delivered cost
Ask for a quote showing:
The material and specification.
Number of bags and confirmed weight per bag.
Material cost.
VAT.
Delivery charges and any other applicable costs.
The lowest price per bag may not provide the lowest cost for the quantity you need. Consider leftover material, storage space and whether ordering too little could lead to another delivery charge.
Check delivery access before ordering
Send your postcode and describe any parking restrictions, narrow roads, timed access or unloading limitations.
Explain where the materials need to be placed and confirm the arrangements before booking the order. If space is limited, ask whether separate deliveries are possible and what they would cost.
Read our delivery information for more about arranging an order.
Ask TSAR to quote for your requirements
Send Andy and the team your material, required quantity, preferred bag format and delivery postcode.
If either format could work, ask us to compare the available options and complete delivered price.
